Lys Mousset, born on February 8, 1996, was considered a highly talented striker coming through the ranks of Le Havre's youth academy. He made his debut for the first team in the 2013-14 season in Ligue 2. Mousset displayed immense potential, with his physicality, speed, and strong individual skills. His breakthrough came in the 2015-16 season when he scored 14 goals in 28 appearances in Ligue 2.
Mousset reveals that his impressive performances caught the attention of many top clubs. "At that time, many top clubs wanted to sign me. Arsenal and Tottenham were in contact with my representatives and showed a clear interest. I thought I had a chance to join these two clubs, which was the closest I came to a top team," he says.
He adds, "Arsene Wenger is a great coach, and Mauricio Pochettino has helped many young players grow. It was a great feeling to have the interest of these two Champions League clubs. I truly believed I had a chance to play for them."
In the summer of 2016, Mousset made the final decision to join Bournemouth, with a transfer fee of €6.5 million. Looking back, he admits that he may have made a mistake. "Eddie Howe is an excellent coach, but I had very few opportunities at Bournemouth. If I was just going to be the fourth or fifth choice, I believe... I could have signed for Arsenal or Tottenham," Mousset regrets.
During his three seasons at Bournemouth, Mousset only made 71 appearances, mostly as a substitute, scoring 5 goals and providing 1 assist. In search of new challenges, he left the club in the summer of 2019.
Sheffield United secured Mousset's services for £10 million. He enjoyed a strong start at the club, scoring 5 goals and providing 3 assists in his first 11 appearances. It seemed like his career was about to take off. However, due to various reasons, Mousset faced ups and downs in the following seasons. He admits that family issues affected him, and he could have been more consistent in his performance.
"My season started so well, but then it wasn't the same. I faced a lot of problems in December 2019... including two family issues that needed to be dealt with. Besides, my mindset wasn't clear," Mousset explains.
In the 2019-20 season, Mousset made 30 appearances, scoring 6 goals and providing 4 assists. However, things took a turn for the worse. Sheffield United suffered a decline in form, and Mousset's personal form and fitness deteriorated. Injuries added to his woes.
Afterwards, Mousset struggled to find his goal-scoring form, making little impact at Salernitana and Bournemouth, where he was even frozen out due to attitude issues. A loan move to Ligue 2 side Nimes failed to reignite his career.
In January 2024, Mousset became a free agent. There were rumors linking the once-promising goalscorer to Hartz, but no deal materialized.
Mousset's talent is undeniable, with his physicality, technical ability, and game-changing skills. However, his Premier League record of 9 goals in 99 appearances (many of them as a substitute) highlights a lack of influence in games. Although statistics do not tell the whole story, his inconsistency has severely affected his performances. On and off the field, his lack of professionalism has hindered his development.
